These are due by the end of the first week of term (9th September 2012)

Unification of Germany
Who was the better leader: Metternich or Bismarck?

Unification of Italy
What were the main effects of French rule in Italy during the Napoleonic period (1799-1815)?

Your essay should consider the situation before and during Napoleonic rule. It should also aim to assess the impact of French rule on concepts of ‘national identity’ in Italy at this time.

Things to consider:
*Different social groups (Peasants, middle class etc)
*Governmental, Legislative & administrative changes
*The Church
*Demands of the French state (economically, militarily etc)
